ROGER DAY

"Timeline"

Redhill Common

"Timeline"
10ft Oak Carved Bench And Larch Obelisk installed at The Millennium Trail on Redhill Common.

Commisioned by The Downlands Project and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council , Roger Day created “Timeline”, The Millennium Trail way marker recently installed on Redhill Common. The project aims to promote the historical, geographical, and ecological importance of this beautiful area of the Surrey landscape transversed by The Millennium Trail. “Timeline” celebrates a sympathetic response to change within nature, to the cycles of the sun, the seasons and the land. Using locally sourced timber, Roger has created a large “Gnomon”, the pointing Device of a sundial, which will have the cross section of “M” the Roman numeral for one thousand or “Millennium”. Also a large sculptural Oak bench carved with scenes depicting the history of Redhill Common, marks the hours of the passing day

Themes include:-

Strata of the unique local geology.

The flint tools excavated, showing man's use of the hill from early times.

A regular route for travelling pilgrims.

The water springs arising from the hill.

The grazing of the common for centuries that maintained the open heath.

The skirmish of the English Civil War that took place here.

The gravel digging that threatened the hill but was stopped in 1883.

The sighting of the London to Brighton Railway and hence Redhill Town.

The once proposed prison survey marker stones still evident in the woods.

The fauna and flora of this incredibly beautiful place.
